African Birdseye Chillies are the dry fruit pods of a variety of Capscicum frutescens plant. Often called piri piri chillies, they have lots of flavour and lots of heat (175 – 250,000 SHU) so go easy on them to start with! They were brought to Africa by the Portuguese in the 1500s and rapidly became a very popular ingredient across the continent. Asian and Indian cuisines often use them too, to add heat and flavour to dishes.
The African Birdseye Chillies are best for sauces and cooking with, rather than garnishing food with. Chop them up, or use whole in cooking to add a delicious flavour and fiery heat. You can also make up a spicy drizzle for salads or pizza by infusing oil or vinegar with them. Just be sure to check the heat is something you can handle before pouring it over your dinner! If you’re looking for something with less heat, we have the Kashmiri and Chipotle Morita Chillies available.
