Mexican Oregano

Mexican Oregano comes from the Lippia graveolens plant and isn’t really an Oregano at all. It is in the verbena family, rather than the mint family like “normal” Oregano and native to Texas, Mexico and as far south as Nicaragua. But honestly, we don’t care about the providence of the name when it tastes as good as it does. Mexican Oregano has some similarities to regular oregano, but is stronger and more pungent in aroma. This makes it perfect for Mexican dishes that use a lot of herbs and spices, as it stands up to them well.

It isn’t only for use in these kinds of dishes, you can use it wherever you like (but do keep in mind its strength!). Use it with pizzas, grilled or roasted meats and in pasta sauces to add a burst of extra flavour. We find that any recipe that calls for this amazing herb always turns out better with the genuine article rather than a substitute. As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
