Yeast Powder is the inactivated cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This means that you cannot use it to make bread rise, but it does have other uses in baking. It can improve dough quality and therefore the final food. It can help dough relax, making it softer and more workable and it also helps reduce shrinkage and deformation. This is very handy when you’re making pizza bases or other breads that need stretching. It will hold it’s shape better while you’re getting ready to cook it.

Yeast Powder is also a good flavouring. It brings a rich, savoury note to foods. Some describe it as nutty, cheesy or distinctly umami. This makes it great for adding these flavours without the need to add salt or fat from cheese. Perfect if you’re looking for cheesy flavours as a vegan. Add to your own spice blends and rubs to add a lot of flavour and depth. You could always just sprinkle it on foods as it is if you want! We also have Baking Powder and Bicarbonate of Soda if you’re looking for other baking products.

As with any ingredient, be sure to add a little at a time to get the flavour you want, if you can. You can always add more, but removing it again can be very difficult.
