Allspice Berries are the dry, unripe fruits of the Pimenta dioica tree which is native to the Greater Antilles, Southern Mexico and Central America. With a taste like a combination of Nutmeg, Cloves, Cinnamon and Black Pepper, you can see why they have the name ALLspice! They are one of the cornerstone ingredients of Caribbean cooking, where it sometimes goes by the name pimento. They’re an important ingredient in Jerk Seasoning and many other spice blends throughout the world. You can find Allspice Berries in use across America, the Middle East, much of Europe and beyond.
Allspice Berries are pretty versatile in the kitchen in both savoury and sweet dishes. They work well in casseroles, roasts, stews, stuffings and are a great match with sausages. You can also use them when making breads, cookies, cakes and Christmas puddings if you like the flavour they give. Allspice Berries are perfect for making your own custom blend of spices with whatever you want, and they are one of the ingredients in 5 Pepper Mix.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
