Whole Cloves are the dry buds of the Syzygium Aromaticum plant. It is a very intense, aromatic and warming spice that works very well alongside other spices to create some delicious combinations. You’ll often find it with Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Allspice, making warming winter blends that have a festive flavour to them. Of course, you can get those flavours the whole year round if you want! Whole Cloves are great with gammon and pork, chicken and other poultry and all kinds of chutneys and sauces. Grind them up into your own custom spice blend to create something truly your own.
Whole Cloves have a wonderful aromatic fragrance that is great for use in scenting a room. They’re very popular at Christmas, alongside Cinnamon and Star Anise to make warm, welcoming scents in the home. Push them into an orange to make a pomander decoration, releasing the scent of orange and cloves through your home.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
