Did You Know Cumin Has Many Health Benefits?

No, really! Cumin has long been used to treat a variety of minor medical issues, ranging from indigestion to headaches. While this is mostly true in India – one of the locations from which cumin comes from – more and more research has been done that backs up the surprising potential health benefits cumin can offer, including:

Antibacterial: Cumin may help to eliminate some bacteria in your body that can make you sick by limiting the growth of microorganisms like E. coli, which causes food poisoning. It’s antibacterial properties may also explain why many people view cumin as a preserve.

Cholesterol: There have been numerous studies that suggest cumin can help regulate cholesterol levels by reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. This study was done by dissolving ground cumin powder into yogurt.

Diabetes: For individuals living with diabetes, you may already know that cumin was traditionally used as an antidiabetic drug as it can help balance your blood sugar. In fact, your doctor may prescribe cumin supplements to work alongside your treatment.

While cumin is typically a brownish colour, you may also find black cumin seeds, green cumin, and white cumin. The colour difference is determined by several factors but also depends on the cumin plant used for growth. Cumin Seeds are the dry seeds of the Cuminum Cyminum plant. These strongly aromatic, light brown seeds are an amazing ingredient that you can use to flavour a wide range of foods. Sprinkling on vegetables that you going to roast is a great idea, and they go perfectly with carrots, potatoes and squashes. It is also great for flavouring roast chicken and other meats.

Of Course, Cumin Seeds are perfect for low and slow cooking too. Add to soups, tagines, curries, chilli con carne and falafel. They’re also good for baking with, adding interest to breads, and other savoury foods. They pair well with Coriander Seeds, Garlic, Turmeric, Onions and in Indian cooking, chefs fry Cumin Seeds in hot oil to temper it. This flavours the oil before other ingredients go in, infusing the food with delicious tastes from the beginning of the cooking process.

As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
