Caraway Seeds come from the fruit of the Carum Carvi Plant and is known by a few different names around the world, including Persian Cumin and Meridian Fennel. They have a complex flavour, bittersweet, nutty and sharp with hints of pepper, anise and citrus. In our experience they are great for use in bakery, including breads (particularly rye bread), scones and biscuits, but you can also make it work in cakes and muffins. Caraway Seeds are good for savoury cooking too, pairing well with vegetables and cheeses, pork dishes and pasta. If you like the flavour they give, there is no end to the foods you could try them with! They go very well with Hot Paprika, Garlic, Fennel, Oregano, Parsley and much more.
The name “Caraway” seems to have a rather unclear history as to how it came about. In English, it has been in use since at least 1440, with possible Arabic origins, but Latin, Greek and Sanskrit have used the term interchangeably with Cumin and Fennel, which they are different from.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
