Birdseye Chilli Powder comes from the dry, ground pods of the piri piri chilli, in the Capsicum frutescens family. It also goes by the names peri peri and pili pili, depending on the region, but its all the same chilli. This is a chilli powder that you use when you want both flavour and punch, coming in as it does between 50,000 and 100,000 on the Scoville heat scale. Some samples even go as high as 175,000, so try to test the batch before use!

Birdseye Chillies came to Africa thanks to the Portuguese, where it rapidly became a favourite of the people across the continent. It now grows in many places throughout Africa, which is often where you’ll find the best examples of this delicious, fiery chilli.  Add an instant kick of heat to whatever you want to, or pep up spice blends and rubs for some eye watering heat. Birdseye Chilli Powder is great for swapping out with lower heat powders if you want to heat up an existing recipe. Other hot chilli powders we have include Habanero, Scotch Bonnet and Vietnamese Tear Jerker, but if you’re after enormous levels of heat, we have Superhot Chilli Powder and Ghost Pepper Chilli Powder.

The heat from chillies is a subjective thing, we find; what some may find too hot, others might find tame. Therefore, you should go easy on chillies, chilli powders and blends with chilli in them to find the heat level you like. If you are tasting as you go, you can always add more if you want, but removing heat from a dish can be very difficult.
