Gochugaru Chilli Flakes is a Korean staple that is popular in many dishes from their cuisine. It is mild in heat but high in flavour! With a fruity tang and smoky taste, it is fairly unique in what it is. The nearest alternative might be chipotle, but even that is quite a jump. That said, there seems to be a great deal of conflicting information regarding this spice. Some say it’s spicy, some say mild. some say its from one chilli variety, other say it doesn’t matter or its a blend. Ours comes from South Korea, so that’s authentic enough for us!
Gochugaru is an important ingredient in kimchi, adding its unique flavour and slight spice. You can also use it in stews or to make gochujang – a red chilli paste that combines gochugaru, glutinous rice, soy beans and salt. Again, it’s very popular in South Korea and much of the wider world. Why not add some to scrambled eggs for extra flavour, or pep up snacks such as popcorn and other snacks. Incorporate it into your own spice blends to really add some great flavours to your dishes! Other chilli flakes we have include Chipotle Chilli Flakes, De Arbol Flakes and Crushed Chillies.
As with any ingredient, always add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. It’s easy to add more but can be difficult or impossible to remove.
