Crushed Chillies are a very convenient staple in many peoples spice cupboard. Having some on hand, you can quickly add heat and tangy, spicy flavour to your dishes. They are very popular when making curries and chilli con carne, or sprinkling over pizza or potato wedges. You can also use them to create custom spice blends for Harissa and Tacos or add to a pepper grinder with the peppercorns for extra heat!
Crushed Chillies are made from the dried, crushed and heat treated pods of Capsicum Frutescens and Capsicum Annum L. These are tabasco and cayenne chillies, so have a medium heat and great flavour. The blend includes the chilli seeds which some believe is where most of the heat is. It is actually the white pith around the seeds that contains the most heat.
The heat from chillies is a subjective thing we find; what some may find too hot, others might find tame. Therefore, you should go easy on chillies, chilli powders and blends with chilli powders in them to find the heat level you like. If you are tasting as you go, you can always add a little more if you need to, but taking heat out is difficult if not impossible.
