Scotch Bonnet Chilli Powder comes from dry, ground pods of a species of Capsicum chinense. These fiery chillies are very popular across the Caribbean as well as the wider world. Their fruity, hot flavour makes them perfect for spicing up sauces and dishes especially those from West Africa, India and of course the Caribbean. However, sometimes you can’t find a decent fresh chilli anywhere. That or you don’t want the hassle of chopping up fresh chillies! That’s where a chilli powder comes in.
Our Scotch Bonnet Chilli Powder is the best example we can find, and is pure, 100% Scotch Bonnet. You won’t often find these chillies in powder form, which is why we’re happy to have found a top quality source. It has a delicious flavour that will enhance many foods, if you can handle the 100,000 to 200,000 Scovilles of heat! Add a little to seasonings, rubs and blends or add some to curries and other sauce based foods. Alternative chilli powders are Habanero, Superhot and Ghost Pepper (if you want silly amounts of heat), or Cayenne, De Arbol and Red Jalapeno if you want milder heat.
The heat from chillies is a subjective thing we find; what some may find too hot, others might find tame. Therefore, you should go easy on chillies, chilli powders and blends with chilli powders in them to find the heat level you like. If you are tasting as you go, you can always add a little more if you need to, but taking heat out is difficult if not impossible.
