Celery Seeds come from the Apium graviolens plant, otherwise known as Smallage or wild celery. This plant is in the carrot family, and unlike regular celery, the stems aren’t that good for eating as they are quite stringy. That said, the French use them in soups and stews as they say it has a stronger flavour than regular celery. The seeds themselves have a bitter flavour and when cooking with they add a strong vegetal taste to dishes.
Celery Seeds are in so many foods, either as they are or in the form of Celery Salt. Whether you’re making sauces and chutneys, stews or soups, marinades or rubs, celery seeds can help add a delicious earthy flavour. Other seed spices we have include Cumin Seeds, Coriander Seeds, Caraway Seeds, Nigella Seeds, Aniseeds and more.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
