Vanilla Sugar is a great thing to have in the cupboard if you’re big on dessert making! It does not get its flavour from extracts or flavourings, but from actual vanilla pods. These ground pods are mixed with the sugar and left to mature and infuse for 4 months, minimum. This time gives the sugar a wonderful flavour that you would expect from vanilla. By using proper pods instead of flavouring, the taste is more natural and authentic. It can also change very subtly from batch to batch, depending on the climate the pods grew in and annual variations in weather.
Vanilla Sugar is a great swap out for regular sugar when baking cookies, cakes and muffins. This is especially true if you want vanilla to be the dominant flavour. You can also use it as a finishing sprinkle for the top of desserts such as cinnamon rolls, yoghurts and fruit salads. Add some to a drink such as coffee or hot chocolate for a subtle, warming vanilla flavour. If you are topping the drink (or any dessert) with whipped cream, adding vanilla sugar to it can really make a difference. It’s a great ingredient to have for lots of sweet culinary creations!
