Coconut Blossom Sugar is a wonderful alternative to castor or brown sugar, with more nutritional value. It comes from the Cocos nucifera tree (coconut palm) that grows extensively in tropical places. Farmers make a cut on the flower stem of the coconut flower and collect the liquid sap, which will become the sugar. It is heated until most of the water content evaporates and leaves the sugar crystals behind, which are brown in colour. Coconut Blossom Sugar has minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and amino acids in it, and a lower glycaemic index than normal sugar. Please be aware though, that to get your daily needs for these things, you’d have to eat an awful lot of it, and the calories that come with it. It is still sugar at the end of the day!
We think it is the flavour that makes Coconut Blossom Sugar shine above all else. It has a delicious caramel like taste and aroma and will add these flavours to anything you make with it. As you can switch it for other sugars, you can bake cakes, cookies, muffins and much more with it, enriching them with caramel like notes. You can also add it to tea or coffee in place of white sugar for a little extra flavour. We have a couple of other sugars that are just as delicious, including Okinawa Black Sugar, Cinnamon Sugar and Demerara Sugar.
