Basil Seeds sometimes go by the name Sabja Seeds and are the small black seeds of the Ocimum basilicum plant. They have been a part of Indian cooking for a long time and are becoming more widely used in the west as time goes by. Alot of this is because of the high fibre content of the seeds as well as the natural gelling action they give when you soak them in water. This feature makes them good as athickener for foods if you’re looking for an alternative to other thickening agents.
Basil Seeds are a popular ingredient in drinks and desserts (such as Indian Falooda). They bring a slightly floral flavour to food and drink as well as hints of basil, as you may expect. These seeds are used very much like chia seeds for health benefits, delivering a big dose of fibre and other nutrients. As with all high fibre products, use with care to avoid raising fibre levels too high as this can bring its own health complications.
Other seeds products we have include fennel seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds, to name just a few.
