Citric Acid is a useful ingredient to have as it has quite a few uses in the kitchen as well as around the home. Many bakers use it to improve the texture of bread and cakes and it works as an emulsifying and binding agent. Citrus fruits have naturally high levels of Citric Acid and you can use the powder to replace lemons in a recipe if need be. You’ll get the tangy sourness, but no real flavour when using it. It is useful in home wine making and brewing, making jams and other preserves or to help tenderise meat. In fact, there are many ways Citric Acid can be used with food and drink, probably far more than we can mention here!
Citric Acid is also great as a cleaning agent, as it is anti-bacterial and non corrosive. As it is acidic, it can help break down limescale and cuts through grease and oils. You can also find it in soaps, shampoos and bath bombs and many people use it in their homemade bathroom products. As it has antibacterial properties, you can also use it to sterilise baby bottles and equipment, utensils or anything else.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
Suitable for vegetarian and vegan recipes.
