Nettle Leaves are the dry leaves of the Urtica dioica plant, or the common stinging nettle. Nettles have long been used in medicine, foods, drinks and textile manufacture. That’s one versatile plant! The flavour is much like spinach, but stronger; so quite “green” tasting with a peppery zing. One of the best uses for Nettle Leaves is in making herbal teas. Steeping the leaves in water releases lots of vitamins and mineral which are great for your health. You can also use them to brew your own beer or make wine.

Nettle Leaves are also great for cooking with. The leaves do need cooking so are not suitable for salads an the like. You can, however, add some to soups, stews and other slow cooked foods to bring extra flavour. If you’re into textiles, you can also use the leaves to make a great green dye! Whatever you use them for, if you have some left over, don’t throw them away – they make a great fertilizer for your garden. Other herbs we have include Lemon Verbena, Red Sage, Oregano and Dill, to name a few!

As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
