Lemon Verbena is the dried and cut leaves of Aloysia triphylla syn. Lippia citriodora, a deciduous shrub. As the name suggests, the leaves have a wonderful lemon flavour with undertones of herbal notes. This gives it a fairly unique flavour that sets it apart from other herbs. One popular use for this herb is in the preparation of herbal teas. Simply steep 1 teaspoon per cup of hot water for 5 – 15 minutes, depending on taste. This is a great caffeine free alternative to regular tea plus it contains lots of vitamins and minerals.
In the kitchen, why not try adding Lemon Verbena to some butter and melting on a steak, chicken, corn cob and more. A sprinkling on some fish or chicken before cooking will add a delicious flavour and tempting scent. To can also incorporate it into marinades and rubs which will allow the flavours to permeate the food. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also try it in desserts! As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
