Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning

Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning is a blend of ingredients that will let you recreate fried chicken that will rival the big chains, all from your own home! The combination of herbs, spices and salts come together to create a delicious mix that you can use in a few different ways. Like the name suggests, this is an ideal blend for deep frying with. After a few tests, we found that a blend of 2 parts panko breadcrumbs (or normal) to 1 part Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning works well.

As a rough guide, 6 tablespoons of breadcrumbs to 3 of the mix will cover 2 sliced chicken breasts or a pack of mini fillets. Beat an egg and coat the chicken with it before dredging in the crumb/ seasoning mix. Deep fry until golden brown. If you prefer, you can also use flour for a different coating on the chicken, just mix in the same ratio and adjust to taste.

Alternatively, you can oven bake some chicken if you don’t have a deep fat fryer. Use the same ratio as above, again using egg to get the mix to stick and bake for as long as the chicken takes to cook (larger pieces will take longer than wings, for example). You’ll need some oil in the bottom of the pan to get the chicken to crisp up, and you’ll need to turn halfway through cooking to ensure both sides see the oil. Like anything in cooking, you can play with the ratio and cooking methods to find what works best for you.

PLEASE NOTE

The original recipe for Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning contains some Monosodium Glutamate, like takeaway chicken does. After speaking with our customers, we have also created version which is free of MSG, to suit those that are sensitive to it. MSG definitely enhances the blend, but if you opt for the version without, there is still bags of flavour!

As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
