Ground Fennel

Ground Fennel are the dried seeds of Foeniculum Vulgare, the common fennel plant, ground into a powder. Fennel has a warm, slightly sweet flavour, with a flavour very much like aniseed. It is a very popular spice all over the world, in  a multitude of cuisines. It is one of the five spices that make up the ever popular Chinese 5 Spice, used to create lots of fragrant, delicious dishes.

Ground Fennel is also great for adding flavour a variety of Mediterranean dishes of fish meat and vegetables to. You can also use it in bakery, adding to breads and biscuits to give a different taste. As with many ground spices, it is a convenient way of adding flavour. In an ideal world, we’d all have the time to grind our own spices as the flavours tend to be stronger. If you’re on a long cooking session, this is fine, but if you’re knocking something up quick, powder versions are great! We also have Fennel Seeds, should you prefer those.

As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
