Guérande Gros Sel is a coarse Sea Salt that comes from the coast of France, west of Nantes. This area has been producing salt for 2000 years or more, which gives an idea of how good it is! The colour of the salt comes from the clay on the bottom of the salt beds, where the crystals develop. This not only gives a slightly grey colour to the salt, but also a great mineral profile of beneficial elements.
Guérande Gros Sel, unlike our other coarse salts, is available in a jar, not a grinder. This is because this salt has some residual moisture in it which makes grinder use difficult. It is great as a finishing salt though, adding crunch and a delicious flavour to foods. Alternatively, crush it up with a mortar and pestle and use it as a table salt. Guérande Gros Sel is popular with French chefs due to the unique flavour it brings to food. Subtle, strongly salty and delicious! Alternative salts include Halen Môn Welsh Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, Kalahari Desert Salt and Indian Sunflake Salt.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out can be impossible!
