Kalahari Desert Coarse Salt comes from salt beds that were laid down in ancient lakes, long since dried up. Some estimates put the age of this salt as 300 million years, predating the Jurassic by 100 million years! This is also well before pollution bought about by the activities of man, so the salt is a highly pure product. Extraction is by method of dissolving underground in the mines, pumping to the surface to dry in the sun. The salt crystals are very firm, much harder than salt flakes you get in a Fleur de Sal type salt. This is an ideal salt for use in a grinder or mortar and pestle.
Kalahari Desert Coarse Salt has some mineral content from the rocks it has been amongst for so long. While not a replacement for minerals in food, it’s good to know it contributes more than just great flavour! Other Salts we have that are worth a look are Halen Môn Pure Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, Guérande Gros Sel and Indian Sunflake Sea Salt.
As with all herbs, spices and salts, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
