Indian Sunflake Salt is a Fleur de Sel type salt, which translates as “Flowers of Salt”. It is formed when sea water washes onto shallow land and dries in the sun, forming beautiful salt crystals. It can form many shapes, some which look like petals and some like tiny pyramids. These are not as a dense as a rock salt like Kalahari Desert Coarse Salt, and make for great table or finishing salt. The delicate flakes add visual appeal and a delicious flavour to almost any food.
Fleur de Sel can come from many countries, each of which has slight differences from others. This salt comes from India where it is known locally as Sunflakes, and is still harvested using traditional wooden tools. Bizarre as it may sound, but before use, we recommend inspecting some Indian Sunflake Salt closely in your hand to see some of the interesting shapes it forms! We also have Pink Himalayan Salt, Guérande Gros Sel and Coarse Sea Salt from the Red sea, should you want something else.
As with all herbs, spices and salts, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
