German Rock Salt is another ancient salt which you can trace back to around 200 million years ago, when dinosaurs around! At that time, a shallow, inland body of water called the Zechstein sea stretched from Britain to what is now Germany and Poland. It was part of the supercontinent Pangaea, which eventually broke up into the global land formation we have today. As you can imagine, salt from so long ago that now lies 400 – 750 meters underground, has had zero contact with modern day pollutants. As such it is 98.4% salt with some minerals from the surrounding rocks. These include magnesium, calcium, potassium and iodine.
German Rock Salt is perfect for use in a grinder or in a mortar and pestle to break up the pieces. With a medium, pleasant salt flavour, it is highly versatile and a great swap out for regular table salt. Some folks say “salt is salt” and where it comes from matters, but we disagree. Salts have different levels of sodium, which changes the saltiness, and any bound minerals can change the colour and texture too. Not to mention some people don’t necessarily agree with harvesting techniques (such as blast mining). Whatever your preference, this is a great salt to try that has not come from half way around the world to your table! Other great salts we have include Uyuni Desert Salt, Bolivian Rose Salt, Cubic Halit salt and Indian Sunflake Salt.
Always be sure to add a little at a time when adjusting to taste. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible! Always be sure to read the labels before consumption. Suitable for vegetarian, vegan and kosher recipes.
