Bolivian Rose Salt, like many salts, was deposited a long, long time ago in the Andes mountains. There was a time when great parts were underwater and, as geology slow changed, the water receded, leaving behind this salt. Over time, tropical rain forests grew and layers of volcanic rock were laid down, protecting the salt from the environment. It is here that the salt took on some iron minerals, giving it that delicate colouring. Harvesting still happens by hand and transportation still follows the same caravan routes from the time of the Incas.
Bolivian Rose Coarse Salt is great as a swap out for any other salt you may have. With a medium sodium flavour, it will season foods wonderfully while adding a little extra nutrition. It has some mineral content from the rocks it has been amongst for so long. such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. While not a replacement for minerals in food, it’s good to know it contributes more than just great flavour! Other Salts we have that are worth a look are Halen Môn Pure Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan Salt, Guérande Gros Sel and Indian Sunflake Sea Salt.
As with all herbs, spices and salts, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
