Onion Powder comes from the common onion Allium Cepa. It is an extremely useful store room ingredient that has many culinary uses. Onions are the 2nd most consumed vegetable, after tomatoes, and with good reason. Both the taste and scent of onions is enough to make the mouth water, but sometimes you might need the flavour but not the water content of an onion. That’s where Onion Powder comes in! 1 teaspoon replaces half an onion (approximately), so a little goes a long way.
It is perfect for use in almost any dish that asks for onions for flavour, so soups, stews, casseroles and curries for example. You can also bake it into bread, add it to sauces and dips, create marinades and much more. All this without having to cut a single onion. Onion Powder is finely milled and suits sauce based food very well as it will dissolve and dissipate throughout the dish. Onion Granules may be a better choice for rubs and other seasonings with their coarser texture. We also have Minced Onion which is even larger grains, or Onion Salt which might be more useful in some situations.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
