Red Onion Powder comes from the Allium cepa plant and has a slightly sweeter taste than white or brown onions. The onions are peeled and trimmed of the root and core, washed and left to air dry. They then go through a milling process to create a fine pink/ purple powder. Red Onion Powder has a multitude of uses in the kitchen, adding flavour to soups and sauces as well as enhancing meats such as sausages and burgers.
If you like to make your own spice blends and marinades, Red Onion Powder is an excellent ingredient to add. It is also great for low and slow cooking such as casseroles, stews and curries. The fine powder will dissolve away leaving only the flavour. You can also use this versatile ingredient in bakery, enhancing the flavours of breads, pies and quiches or whatever else you can think of. Alternative onion products we have are Minced Onion, Onion Powder (white), Onion Granules, Crispy Fried Onions and Onion Salt.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
