Hungarian Paprika and Spanish Paprika are a staple of spice cupboards the world over, and are an important ingredient in cuisines everywhere. It comes from peppers in the Capsicum annuum family which originate from Central American regions. With the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 15th century, peppers rapidly spread across Europe, becoming an integral part of cuisines throughout the continent. Spain and Hungary were the main growers and users of paprika in defining dishes such as paella and goulash soup. Today, they are the main producers for Europe and much of the world beyond.
At The Spice Cupboard, we love paprika, which is why we have so many types available! You can divide the range into Hungarian and Spanish paprika, with Hungarian generally considered to be the higher quality. That’s not to say Spanish is no good! The paprika from Spain supplies a great deal of the continents requirements and has a flavour profile all of it’s own. Here, we have a look at the range of products we have available (at time of writing – we’re always on the lookout for more).

HUNGARIAN PAPRIKAS
– Hungarian Noble Sweet Paprika – Possibly the most sought after type of paprika, it has a fruity, sweet flavour and a wonderful red colouring. It is an important ingredient in dishes such as Chicken Paprikash and stuffed peppers.
– Hungarian Sweet Smoked Paprika – Much like Noble sweet, but with a smoky flavour that suits many dishes. Great for changing up recipes or creating marinades and rubs ready for a barbeque.
– Hungarian Hot Paprika – If you like a bit of heat with your high quality paprika, this could be for you. It uses spicier peppers than sweet paprika to bring a kick of heat with that amazing flavour.
– Hungarian Mild Paprika Paste – Everything you love about Hungarian Paprika but in an easy to use, squeezable tube. Great for traditional Hungarian dishes or spreading in sandwiches or on pizza bases to boost flavour.
– Hungarian Hot Paprika Paste – Again, much like the above, but with an extra hit of peppery warmth.
SPANISH PAPRIKAS
– Paprika – Your “Standard” paprika, ubiquitous in recipes everywhere. Bought, sold and consumed in huge volumes all over the world!
– Spanish Sweet Paprika – The Spanish equivalent of Hungarian Noble Sweet, it also has a sweet, fruity flavour and is a perfectly acceptable replacement should Hungarian not be available.
– Smoked Paprika – This not only brings that earthy, sweet pepperiness to your foods, but also a smoky background taste that suits a great many dishes.Perfect for flavouring soups, stews and all kinds of casseroles.
– Hot Paprika – All the flavour of Spanish Paprika but with an extra hit of spice! We’re not talking crazy heat, but enough to get your attention and make the dish more interesting.
– Hot Oak Smoked Paprika – A combination of spice and smoke, this is one of our favourites at The Spice Cupboard. Adds plenty of flavours to dishes, but we also like to mix it with the cheese on a jacket potato.
As you can see, there are many varieties to choose from, and we’re sure this isn’t even close to what is available on the open market. Paprika is a very important ingredient in both Hungarian and Spanish cuisines, but also in many other dishes. It is a big part of American flavours too, such as Southern Fried Chicken, Macaroni and cheese, Chilli Con Carne, Adobo and much, much more. You will also find it in Indian, Mediterranean, and Asian dishes, bringing it’s culinary versatility almost up to the likes of black pepper! This one spice can bring colour, aroma and flavour to your foods in one, easy to use ingredient!
