Ground Cardamom is the powdered seed pods from the Elettaria cardamomum plant. It has an amazing flavour and fragrance, and you don’t need much to impart these into your food. This is quite a versatile spice that is great in a wide range of cuisines, both savoury and sweet. Ground Cardamom has a complex flavour, being spicy, herbal, citrusy and slightly minty. Cardamom pods in general are one of the most expensive ingredients in the world, and as such the powder isn’t cheap either. But, as mentioned above, you don’t need much to really boost the flavour of foods.
Ground Cardamom is perfect for use in curries, tagines, soups and stews and much more. You can also make chutneys, stew fruit or even add a pinch to homemade chocolates and ice creams. As with many ground spices, it is a convenient way of adding flavour. In an ideal world, we’d all have the time to grind our own spices as the flavours tend to be stronger. If you’re on a long cooking session, this is fine, but if you’re knocking something up quick, powder versions are great! We do have Green Cardamom Pods and Black Cardamom Pods too, if you’d prefer those.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
