Tamarind Paste comes from the pods of the Tamarindus indica tree that is indigenous to tropical Africa, but now grows across Asia and Central America. A fully mature tree can produce up to 175kg of fruit per year! Tamarind Paste is sticky and sour and is great for adding flavour to chutneys, curries and Sayur Asem Soup. You’ll find it in many popular household sauces such as Worcester Sauce and HP Sauce.
There are many brands of Tamarind paste available, and this is a great example of a great quality paste. It comes from the Tamil Nadu region of India and contains no preservatives, colours, salt, flavour enhancers or sugar. There are also no seeds and fibres from the fruit, only pure paste. Other products that give a sour flavour include Mango Powder, Lemon Juice Powder and Lime Juice Powder, should you want an alternative.
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
