Lovage is the dry leaves of the Levisticum officinale plant, the sole species in the levisticum genus. It one of those herbs that many people have heard of, but not tried, partly because it isn’t that widesly available. This is a real shame as it has a great flavour akin to a mix of celery, parsley and anise. Lovage is great for flavouring salads, soups and broths and much more besides. In the Netherlands they cook it with white asparagus and serve with eggs. In Ukraine, they use it as an aphrodisiac, but we make no claims that it is good for that!
Lovage originated in Afghanistan and Iran before being introduced to Europe a long time ago. Since then, it has been used as a herb, a drink flavouring, a digestive aid and in herbal teas. Whatever you decide to do with it, Lovage is a great herb to have in your cupboard. If you’ve never tried it before, what could be more fun than experimenting with a new flavour! Other great herbs we have include Mexican Oregano, thyme, Parsley, Sage, Curry Leaves and Malabathrum Leaves and many more!
As with all herbs and spices, add a little at a time to get the flavour you want. You can always add more, but taking it out again can be impossible!
